Knox Leisureworks was buzzing with energy recently as they welcomed a group of secondary-school careers counsellors taking part in the Australian Centre for Career Education (ACCE) annual conference.
As part of the event, counsellors had the chance to join industry tours, and Knox were thrilled to be one of the featured stops.
Visitors were greeted by team members Darren Allen Venue/Area Manager, Olivia Heinen Duty Manager and Tyron Wiese Aquatic Services Officer, who gave a behind-the-scenes look at what really goes into running a busy community leisure venue. From pool deck operations to customer service and aquatic safety, the group got a feel for the variety of roles that keep Knox Leisureworks running smoothly.
A big focus of the tour was showcasing how young people can kick-start their careers in the leisure industry. Many team members begin as lifeguards or swim teachers and, with the right support, work their way into leadership roles across aquatics, fitness, customer service and venue management.
Belgravia Academy joined in on the day as well, sharing how their training programs help staff gain qualifications, build confidence and stay supported as they grow. Their team spoke about the increasing demand for well-trained aquatic and recreation professionals, and how today’s casual job can become tomorrow’s career.
“It was fantastic to host ACCE careers counsellors at Knox Leisureworks, showcasing how young people can begin as lifeguards or swim teachers and grow into rewarding careers, supported by Belgravia Academy’s training pathways,” said Danielle Buszard, Community Engagement Coordinator.
The visit sparked plenty of great conversations about youth employment, skill-building and the important role community leisure centres play in offering real, accessible career pathways.
