Pickleball fever is red hot on the Mornington Peninsula, with local Belgravia Leisure venues seeing record breaking participation.
As reported in the Mornington Peninsula News, between January and September 2025, Somerville Recreation Centre recorded a 97 percent increase in hours of play compared to the same period last year, totalling 9,857 hours.

Civic Reserve Recreation Centre in Mornington saw an even greater surge, with a 145 percent increase and 7,350 hours of play. This growth reflects a broader national trend, as pickleball gains momentum and is even being considered for inclusion in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
Celebrated globally on October 10 as World Pickleball Day, the sport blends elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, offering a fast-paced, social and accessible way to stay active. At Somerville Recreation Centre, courts have transformed from places to play to spaces for connection and community.
Alana Thomas, Assistant Centre Manager at Somerville Recreation Centre, said the sport’s appeal lies in its inclusivity and energy:
“The sport has taken off, turning courts into social hubs of community connection and fun. A lot of younger players bring their friends along, playing a match then staying for coffee afterwards,” she said. “The sport is truly for everyone, as we’ve seen older adults introducing their children and grandchildren to the game.”

Alana also highlighted the health benefits and year-round accessibility of pickleball. “Members love the fast pace of the sport and the movement involved is vital for overall health. They can enjoy it year-round as it’s an indoor sport.”
“Affordability is another key factor in its popularity. Seniors can access up to 12 pickleball sessions a week across both venues for as little as $16.60 per week. A new ten-visit pass has also been introduced to make it even easier for community members to get involved,” Alana said.
As interest continues to grow, Somerville and Civic Reserve Recreation Centres are helping to lead the way in making pickleball a sport that’s not only fun and accessible, but also meaningful for physical health and social wellbeing.
