Ever thought about what Māori architecture looks like in the 21st century? The Drawing Board, a new Whakaata Māori documentary series, explores exactly that. Showcasing a wave of modern Māori architecture sweeping across Aotearoa, led by some of the country’s freshest design talent.
Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa is proud to be featured in episode 7. The show investigates how cultural wellness sits at the heart of everything Wai Ariki does, starting with its stunning venue in Rotorua.
“The whole concept of Wai Ariki was built around the Ngāti Whakaue concept of wellness and healing from a Māori perspective,” says David Tapsell, Chairman of the Pukeroa Oruawhata Trust.
From the sculptural ancestors standing firm outside to the intricate kowhai patterns inside, every detail of the spa is imbued with deep cultural meaning.
General Manager Debbie Robertson shared, “Wai Ariki is more than a spa, it’s a living expression of our culture and values. A world-class wellness and spa destination rooted in te ao Māori and inspired by the legacy of the Ngāti Whakaue iwi. It blends cultural storytelling, geothermal healing and holistic therapies to offer guests a deeply restorative experience unlike any other and that’s what sets Wai Ariki apart.”
Multi-award-winning Wai Ariki continues to be recognised for its unique blend of tradition and innovation, grounded in Ngāti Whakaue values and designed to uplift and heal.
