As we approach October, Safety Month at Belgravia Leisure, it’s an important time to reaffirm our collective commitment to creating a safe and healthy environment across all our venues.
Scott Vanderheyden, Acting Group Health & Safety Manager says, “Safety is not just a priority for us, it’s a core part of our identity and values. This month we’re encouraging our teams to shine a spotlight on our dedication to safety by organising Safe-Tea events and celebrating our ongoing efforts to keep each other safe, happy and well.”
As we approach World Mental Health Day on October 10th, we’re also placing a special focus on psychosocial health as an integral part of Safe Work Month.
Understanding psychosocial hazards
A key focus this October is on psychosocial health, aligning with World Mental Health Day. Psychosocial hazards are factors at work that could cause psychological harm, such as stress, anxiety or burnout, but they can also lead to physical harm. These hazards can arise from how work is designed and managed, or how workplace interactions occur.
Impacts of psychosocial hazards
Psychological injuries related to work have longer recovery times, higher costs and require more time away from work compared to other injuries. Stress is a common response when employees perceive their job demands exceed their ability to cope, triggering physiological and psychological reactions that can impact health over time.
Managing psychosocial hazards in the workplace
- Regularly assess work environments to identify potential psychosocial hazards.
- Implement control measures such as job redesign, better management practices, and fostering a supportive work culture.
- Encourage open communication and active consultation with employees on workplace changes and stressors.
- Report a hazard or incident on B-Connected if anything is concerning or feels uncomfortable. Don’t forget that we also have the Speak-up third-party independent reporting hotline that can be called on 1300 933 or online at: https://belgravia.grapevineonline.com.au
Belgravia Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
To support our team’s mental health, Belgravia partners with Converge International to deliver an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The program offers short-term, solution-focused counselling designed to empower employees to resolve personal and work-related issues. Services are available to all staff and can be accessed quickly, ensuring help is always available.

Physical activity and wellbeing resources
Promoting physical well-being is crucial for mental health. We encourage participation in physical activity initiatives like the free 10,000 Steps Program, which helps track daily activity levels and motivate movement throughout the day.
Additional resources include:
- Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines which provides tips and guidance on staying active.
- Heart Foundation’s “Sit Less, Move More” Campaign provides resources and strategies to reduce sedentary time at work.
Let’s continue working together to foster a culture where safety and well-being are central to everything we do. We want to create workplaces where everyone can thrive, enjoy a better work-life balance and feel supported in their roles.
