Belgravia Leisure helps plant 3000 trees on National Tree Planting Day

On Friday 22 July, seven Belgravia Leisure staff members helped plant 3000 trees as part of Knox City Council’s Corporate National Tree Planting Day.

The event began at 10 am with a welcome to country and smoking ceremony held by Auntie Julie a local indigenous Bunurong woman.

The Mayor of the City of Knox, Cr Susan Laukens opened the event and welcomed approximately 80 volunteers from various businesses across the City of Knox who took part.

People present were asked to make a nature pledge and think about changes they were going to make that would have a positive impact on the environment.

The Belgravia Leisure team made pledges such as composting at home, reducing their single-use plastics and reducing their carbon footprint. A head office team member rode her bike to the event (zero carbon emissions) and also bought along her daughter to help plant trees.

Alexia Morgan, Group Manager, Business Improvement said “It was great to be invited to be a part of this environmental initiative run by Knox City Council. Planting threatened indigenous plants to restore native habitat is an important step to regenerate areas that have been impacted by human development”

The volunteers worked together to plant a variety of indigenous species of trees, shrubs and grasses along the Ferny Creek trail in Knoxfield. Many of the plants were rare or threatened species that Council were trying to re-establish in the area.

The plantings will become an important part of the greening of the City of Knox. The City of Knox aims to have a green canopy covering over 30% of the Knox municipality.

The plantings will form an important wildlife corridor assisting local fauna to move around houses and industrial areas within the municipality.

Belgravia Leisure manages Knox Leisureworks on behalf of Knox City Council.
