Adult learner swimmer, Shella Pecimo from Redcliffe War Memorial Pool’s GOswim program has experienced a fantastic day out at the Australian Open Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast after winning Belgravia Leisure’s GOswim Spring Competition.
Thanks to Belgravia Leisure’s partnership with Swimming Australia, Shella had access to both the morning heats and evening swim finals and spent the day watching Australia’s best, including the Swimming Australia Dolphins, compete on the national stage.
To add to the excitement, Shella was seated alongside Olympian and OAM Kylie Palmer, who is also Redcliffe’s Venue Manager.
“It was amazing to see these talented swimmers in action,” Shella said. “Being there in person makes you appreciate their skill- it made me want to try other strokes as I was watching.”

“This experience perfectly captures the essence of GOswim: celebrating swimming at every level. From elite athletes and future stars to adult learners like Shella, it was inspiring to see the swimmers’ dedication and excitement as they pushed themselves in the pool.”
Why Shella started GOswim
Originally from the Philippines and now living in Scarborough near the beach, Shella joined GOswim to build confidence in the water. Like many adults, she had limited experience before starting lessons and was looking for a supportive, welcoming environment.
“I wanted to properly learn to swim because I know it’s a basic life skill,” she said. “And it’s a great way to keep fit, physically and mentally.”
“As someone who also loves to travel, I knew this would help keep me safe while swimming during my trips.”
Shella is a regular swimmer at Redcliffe and won the prize draw after participating in the “Refer a Friend” promo. She loves learning freestyle with her teacher, Heidi and her friend Maria, who was referred, loves the classes.
A thrilling day of competitive swimming
Shella saw the Pho3nix Junior Excellence (JX) Program in action, with Belgravia Leisure coaches supporting young swimmers aged 9–13.
The evening finals were filled with energy, including a win by Paralympian Ricky Betar and inspiring moments with celebrated swimmers like Ben Hance and Molly O’Callaghan.
Coaches and emerging swimmers from Belgravia Leisure venues, including Grace Geitz, Hunter McKenzie and Larni Davis were also present, giving Shella a memorable introduction to competitive swimming.

Inspiring others to take the plunge
Shella’s experience shows what’s possible through GOswim – helping people of all ages build vital life‑saving skills, confidence and connection in the water.
And as Shella discovered, you never know where learning to swim might take you.
