From purple ribbons to community morning teas, Belgravia Leisure venues proudly turned purple for Wear it Purple Day 2025, celebrating LGBTIQA+ youth and this year’s theme Bold Voices, Bright Futures.
The day provided an opportunity for teams and communities to come together, amplify diverse voices and show young people that they are valued, safe and supported in Belgravia Leisure spaces.
Wear it Purple Day is a significant reminder of Belgravia Leisure’s long-term commitment to inclusivity. Guided by its Social Inclusion Statement and Statement in Support of the LGBTIQA+ community, the organisation ensures facilities, programs and services are safe spaces where everyone belongs.
Emma Lowe, Belgravia Leisure’s National Access and Inclusion Coordinator said, “Wear it Purple Day is more than just a single day of celebration. It’s about demonstrating our ongoing commitment to providing safe and welcoming environments for LGBTIQA+ people across all our venues. We want young people especially to know they have a place where they are valued and supported, not only on days like Wear It Purple, but every day.
“We will continue to do our part by collaborating with organisations such as Pride in Sport and the Diversity & Inclusion in Leisure Forum, with the NSW/ACT Forum being held at Aerial, University of Technology Sydney (Ultimo) on Wednesday November 19, helping shape best practice approaches to diversity and inclusion,” Lowe concluded.
According to the Belgravia Leisure Census, nearly 1 in 10 team members in Australia identify as part of the LGBTIQA+ community, serving as a reminder that inclusive actions in venue reflect and support the diversity of the people who work in them.
This year, several venues hosted activities to mark the occasion. A few examples include Thomastown Recreation and Aquatic Centre (TRAC) who brought members and guests together over a community morning tea, while Gungahlin Leisure Centre and WaterMarc encouraged staff and members to wear purple in support.
Belgravia Leisure’s commitment remains clear – to create inclusive spaces where bold voices can shine and bright futures can flourish.
