When Rita Popowski first stepped into the pool at Smithton Wellbeing Indoor Recreation & Leisure (SWIRL) in 2022, she was managing arthritis in her left leg and was almost reliant on a walker. Today, at 83, she’s lifting weights, attending Senior Strength classes and inspiring everyone around her.

“I managed to regain my strength and mobility through Gentle Aqua classes and water-based exercises,” Rita shared.
“This year, I joined the Break My Fall program at SWIRL and even started enjoying time in the gym. I’m truly thankful to the lovely team members there for helping me get moving again and making every moment so enjoyable.”
Rita’s personal triumph is a reflection of SWIRL’s mission to support older adults in staying active, independent and connected. With Smithton’s aging population on the rise, SWIRL is leading the way in creating inclusive, accessible fitness opportunities that go beyond physical health.
Herath Pitawala, Venue Manager at SWIRL, said, “Rita is a true role model. She’s consistent, dedicated and never lets anything stop her. She genuinely enjoys what she does and uplifts everyone around her.”

SWIRL’s success lies in its community-driven approach. Through its partnership with Circular Head Aboriginal Corporation (CHAC), programs such as Break My Fall have helped over 20 older adults improve their strength, confidence and overall wellbeing. The program was initially created to address a growing issue in the community: the increasing risk of falls among the elderly population. The impact has been so positive that CHAC has secured additional grants to expand offerings in the coming year.
Behind the scenes, Group Fitness Instructors Leslee White and Rylan Cole are the driving force, motivating members and making fitness fun and accessible for all abilities.
Popular aquatic programs at the venue include Aquafit, Aqua Bootcamp, Gentle Aqua and Aqua Aerobics, each designed to be beginner-friendly and low impact. On land, classes like Senior Strength, Pilates and Hot Mat combine energetic music, group camaraderie and expert guidance to help older adults thrive.

“As a team, it’s fulfilling to help everyone regardless of age or ability,” Herath added. “We modify programs to ensure everyone feels included and supported.”
SWIRL has also renovated their health club’s spacious gym, which includes pin-loaded machines, free weights and one-on-one coaching for tailored support.
