Portland Leisure and Aquatic Centre (PLACE) has proudly hosted Aquatics Day for the second year in a row as part of the 2025 Tri State Games. The annual, week-long, inclusive sporting event brings together over 300 athletes of all abilities from across Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales.
Offering an opportunity for those living with disability across the three states to participate in sport, the Tri State games provide a stage to promote the athlete’s achievements within the community whilst providing an opportunity to improve their health, fitness and quality of life.
Kyeema Support Services, Glenelg Shire Council, PLACE team members, local volunteers and service clubs were instrumental in facilitating the landmark event which celebrated a wide range of abilities.

A day of inclusivity and connection
The games kicked off with a celebratory street parade and opening ceremony, and from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, energised spectators enthusiastically cheered on the athletes from the poolside. Freestyle, backstroke and butterfly races took place as well as across-the-pool challenges using kickboards, noodles and walking aids.
The event – running from 11th to 14th November, featured athletics events, indoor sports and themed evening functions open for all to attend.
Wanda, a PLACE spokesperson shared:
“It was a pleasure to watch the energy in the pool today from all our participants. We’re so thrilled to be part of an event that celebrates ability and inclusive sport.”
“Seeing the Tri State Games events come together reminded me why what we do is so important: our work helps connect everyone with sporting opportunities,” she continued.
Participant, Michael, shared:
“I love the Tri State Games because I get to catch up with others at the event, travel to other states, make new friends, party every night and win medals! I won 3 medals – 2 bronze and 1 gold.”

At PLACE, the team are honoured to support the Tri State Games’ mission of promoting inclusion and health for all athletes in the community once more, by offering a welcoming and inclusive environment for them to compete and thrive.
